Do I Need an Air Cleaner?

October 4, 2018

In today’s world of environmental pollution, eco-friendly building design, and increased awareness of medical technology and the accompanying health concerns toward leading a long life, many people are aware of the importance of clean air at home and work. It’s only natural to question whether an air purifier may be a boon to a building or whether it isn’t really worth the expense. Like most questions of this nature, there isn’t really a simple answer. It depends on the individual and the amount of time they spend indoors along with who else might visit a particular building and what the expectations are likely to be.

Air Quality

Air quality isn’t a difficult concept to understand, clean filtered air is always going to be better for the immune system and people’s overall good health than air with allergens and contaminants in it. An air conditioner typically can be sufficient to maintain the quality of air for most healthy adults.

Elderly people and small children, or anyone with a compromised immune system or other health issues, such as asthma, may have a higher risk of infection from impure air quality and need extra purification.

Certain public buildings also are expected to provide above average air quality to assure the health of the people who work there or visit as clients.

Inside Air versus Outside Air

The real issue to consider is the quality of air in the area along with the age and general state of repair the building is in. Outside air is typically considered clean, although in a heavily polluted city the outside air quality is not going to be the same as in an expansive rural area. The air inside is often less pure, especially in older buildings, as dust collects in the ductwork or mold forms inside the walls. Such situations definitely deserve the consideration of an additional air purification system independent of the standard heating and air conditioning systems.

Who May Need a Purifier

Essentially, anyone at risk for health concerns related to impure air is a likely candidate for an air purification system in their home. Infants and elderly people are often at risk and should consider testing the air around them and determining a solution to make it as clean as possible. People with allergies or lung issues can also benefit from a purification system.
