About Traditional Water Heaters
Traditional hot water heaters have been used in homes for decades, but is it the right choice for you? A traditional hot water heater constantly stores heated water. These tanks can range from 20 to 80 gallons depending on the size of your home and hot water needs. They are typically positioned in a closet, basement, or garage and the efficiency will range between models, brands, and fuel sources. A traditional hot water heater is the most economical option.
How many years does a traditional hot water heater last?
A traditional tank-style water heater can last anywhere from 8 to 12 years, but as long as it is heating water sufficiently and there are no leaks or strange noises you might be able to get a few more years of service from it. Inside a traditional water heater you will find an anode rod that protects the interior lining. How does it do this? Well it attracts all corrosive particles to itself through a process called electrolysis. Because it attracts these corrosive particles the rod will eventually become too corroded and all of the particles will settle at the bottom of the water tank destroying the lining. Once this process begins to happen, the hot water heater is in its final stage of life.
How big of a traditional hot water heater do I need?
Are you wondering how large of a tank you need for your home? Typically for a household size of 1-4 people it would require 40 gallons, while 3-5 require 50. Finally, with 5 or more people in your home you’ll want to look at a 75 gallon tank.

Also known as “on-demand” water heaters, tankless hot water heaters heat cold water with a gas burner or electric element as it passes through the water heater. These heaters typically require a larger up-front investment, but have many benefits. They are located on a wall that frees up floor space and an excellent option for residences that are occupied part-time. They can reduce energy consumption by as much as 30%, but can run out of hot water during heavy usage and require ventilation.
How many years does a tankless hot water heater last?
Because tankless water heaters do not work continuously to maintain a supply of hot water, they typically last longer than traditional water heaters. Tankless water heaters can last up to 20 years, sometimes even longer. Due to the nature of tankless water heaters, they will eventually suffer from corrosion and require replacement.
