We hear this all the time: “I can just do this myself.” We warn against DIY projects. And we much prefer the acronym, DNIY (Do-Not-Do-It-Yourself). Why? As we touched on in an earlier blog post, it can be dangerous and can actually cost you more money in the long run.
Spring is the perfect time for a maintenance. A maintenance performed by a professional, of course. A spring AC maintenance can not only help save you money, but it can improve efficiency of your equipment, keep it running smoothly, and also protect the health of you and your family. Not to mention, when your air conditioner is off all winter and your furnace is off all summer, it can limit the number of repairs and extend the life of your equipment. A part of the maintenance also includes changing the filter, removing obstructions around the exterior, and much more that a professional could help you with.
You wouldn’t drive your car 10,000 miles without changing the oil. The same goes for your HVAC equipment!
Reprogram Your Thermostat
Consider setting your thermostat for maximum energy savings this season. Give your furnace a break, it’s worked hard all winter long! During the spring and summer, they allow the cool air from your AC to seep outside and the warm air from outside to seep in. This causes your air conditioner to have to work harder to keep your house cool, which in turn causes skyrocketing energy bills. No one wants that!
Cover Up!
We encourage that during the warmer months, you put drapes or curtains on exposed windows. The sun is a primary source of heat gain in your home, especially if left uncovered. And while you have your AC running, you might still walk into your home on a hot summer day and be wildly disappointed. Much like leaks in the windows and doors, your air conditioner has to work much harder if it’s put up against a 27 million degrees sun!
Don’t Be Left in the Cold
Much like you don’t think about your air conditioner in the winter, you don’t think much about your furnace in the summer. We get it. But don’t forget to still schedule annual maintenances on your furnace, even when it’s not in use. This will help ensure that when the cold temperatures do hit the Pacific Northwest, you’re not left in the cold.
